Short on the 4th

Happy (early) Independence Day! I’ve had my hands full this week wrapping up drawings at work and preparing for the three day weekend. As a result, I haven’t had much time to scour the internet for goodies. Having said that, the items here are the best of the week and definitely worth the time.

What I’ve Read:

“Dear Sheryl” | Medium

This open letter to Facebook COO and Lean In author Sheryl Sandberg offers more than mere condolences. It distills empathy and wisdom from someone who has been in the same terrible situation. Although the context is highly specific, the letter reads like a how-to guide on dealing with tragic losses.

What I Saw:

Expanding the Panama Canal | The Atlantic

This photo album from The Atlantic, spanning over 8 years, covers the expansion of the Panama Canal. This is especially fascinating to me because one of my former professors is a special consultant on the project. These breath taking pictures capture the enormous scale of the canal while showcasing the natural wonders of Central America.

What I’ve Heard:

The Adventures of Zoe Nightingale | Love + Radio (28 minutes)

This is a collection of interviews staged by Zoe Nightingale. She holds open conversations with strangers about religion, love, and sex. My favorite part of this episode is the last interview. The war veteran’s sense of humor and candor makes it seem like you are sitting around the fireplace listening to stories from your grandparents. Although in this particular case, I wouldn’t want to hear such explicit stories from my grandfather.
