Thursday Thoughts - 09/01/2022

In this short newsletter, I share the most interesting things that I’ve read, heard, and/or watched over the past week.

What I Read:

How to Be Exuberant | Ask Polly

This article hits home because I was going through the feelings Heather Havrilesky describes in this essay earlier this year. I felt stuck. Every day was just another day of doing the same things.

Her advice is hilarious and poignant. I’m reminded of the theme from Four Thousand Weeks by Olivier Burkeman. In the grand scheme of things, we don’t matter and that’s okay. As he writes in the book, the best way to live is to do the next most necessary thing.

What I Watched:

Selena + Chef

This series has a simple premise, Selena Gomez wants to learn to cook. So she calls up famous chefs on Zoom to teach her. She takes the trend of people finding new hobbies during the COVID pandemic to the next level.

I give Selena Gomez props for putting out something that she might fail at. In this era of social media perfection, we hardly see the mistakes and spoofs. I also enjoyed the snippets of her music that play during the cut scenes. It’s nostalgic in the best way.

What I’m Pondering:

We can apply this idea to make gratitude a habit, by using the following recipe: After I complain I will say something I am thankful for.
