Weekly Randomness

This week exemplifies the randomness of the links in the update. The links this week include a personal story about meeting the president, a poem about the fleeting moments of life, and a YouTube clip from a late night talk show. There is nothing in common between the three except that I read or watched them this past week and found them noteworthy. Regardless, I hope you enjoy the reads and clip.

What I’ve Read:

Barack and Me | Grantland

This is a wonderful personal narrative on President Obama before the 50th anniversary of the marches across Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma. The author uses this historical event as a backdrop for his own tenuous goal of meeting Barack Obama. Obama’s riff on political compromise and the notion of doing anything you want struck a chord with me. It made me cognizant of the fact that the things I do will either affect or require other people.

Amanda Palmer Reads… “Life While-You-Wait” | Brain Pickings

Amanda Palmer reads from a lovely poem from Nobel Laureate Wislawa Szymbroska. The poem, transcribed in the article, takes on a more nuanced meaning when listened to. The poem is the perfect way to describe our one chance at life; it’s not a video game with unlimited retries and restarts.

What I’ve Watched:

Amy Poehler and Seth Reunite for a New Really?!? | Late Night with Seth Meyers

Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler rip into Andy Benoit for dismissing women’s sports. The jokes are sharp, witty, and incredibly funny. However, the messages behind the laughs are noteworthy and made me reconsider my stance on women’s sports.
