Thursday Thoughts - 02/09/2023
Here are my Thursday Thoughts, a short list of the most interesting things that I’ve read, heard, and/or watched over the past week.
What I Read:
A Brief History of the Past 10,000 Years of Monetary Policy
Ben Thompson breaks down investing into simple terms in this post. He then uses this background knowledge to explain what happened to UK pensions at the end of 2022.
Thompson does an excellent job stripping away the financial jargon. The first few paragraphs were illuminating. I gained a boarder understanding of stocks and bonds from reading this piece.
What I Played:
Canvas Board Game
Canvas is a card game similar to Sushi Go. Players take turns picking up cards. Then they combine three cards together to create a painting. The object of the game is the create paintings that match the scoring card criteria.
The game sounds simple but there is an added layer of complexity. The cards collected by the players are transparent. The paintings change depending on how the cards are ordered. This has a huge impact on the final painting and scoring.
My friends and I had a blast playing the game. The rounds are quick and the “spatial puzzle” element is unique.
What I Watched:
The Menu
The Menu is a movie about the horrors of fine dining. Maybe that’s a bit dramatic. It’s a thriller centered around people dining in an exclusive restaurant. There are nods and winks to fine dining culture throughout the movie. It reminds me a bit of Parasite.
I enjoyed the gorgeous shots of the prepared dishes. I also liked how the filmed was structured. The chapters of the movie were broken into courses, each with a clever name and description of the dish.
What I’m Pondering:
“If it entertains you now but will bore you someday, it’s a distraction. Keep looking.”
Naval Ravikant, The Almanack of Naval Ravikant
