Leon's List - 2024 Week 6

Leon’s List is a weekly post about waiver wire players I’m keeping an eye on.

The NFL is taking a stance on gun gesture celebrations

There seems to be more flags for unsportsmanlike conduct lately. Multiple players are being called for this when celebrating a first down or touchdown. Some of these penalties are pretty obvious like Drake London shooting a machine gun after a touchdown. While other are subtle like Darius Slayton using finger guns to celebrate a first down.

The league is making this a point of emphasis. The penalty is 15 yards from the end of the play. The player also gets a fine of about $14,000.

I think it’s a bit excessive but understand why the league wants to crack down on it. Especially the more dramatic ones like Drake London’s celebration in Atlanta after a school shooting occurred in that city.

Here’s my list for Week 5:

JuJu Smith-Schuster (WR - KC)

JuJu Smith-Schuster is the WR1 for the Chiefs with Rashee Rice out for the season.

He might not be as explosive as he was in his younger years. But he will get the ball from Patrick Mahomes. This was true on Monday night, Juju had seven catches and 130 receiving yards. He could have also had a touchdown if he didn’t drop a pass in the end zone.

Darnell Mooney (WR - ATL)

Darnell Mooney is the 15th ranked receiver by total fantasy points.

He sits just behind CeeDee Lamb and ahead of DJ Moore. He would be ranked higher if he didn’t drop that deep pass in the 4th quarter last Thursday.

I don’t expect ridiculous numbers like last week (9 catches, 105 yards, and 2 TDs). But Kirk Cousins and the Flacons offense look better with every game. And Mooney has proven himself to be a steady number two in Atlanta.

Jalen Tolbert (WR - DAL)

Tolbert slides into the WR2 spot for Dallas with Brandon Cooks on IR.

Tolbert made the most of the opportunity with 7 catches for 87 yards and a touchdown. If teams continue to take away CeeDee Lamb, Tolbert will get more looks his way.

Jake Haener (QB - NO)

This is complete dart throw.

Derek Carr left the game on Monday Night with an oblique injury. Jake Haener didn’t look too bad in his relief effort.

From my brief research, Haener was a 4th round pick in 2023. He played quarterback at Fresno State for three years. He can’t be worse than Gardner Minshew or Will Levis, right?
