Thursday Thoughts - 10/13/2022
In this short newsletter, I share the most interesting things that I’ve read, heard, and/or watched over the past week.
What I Watched:
The Redeem Team | Netflix
The Redeem Team is a documentary about the 2008 US Men’s Olympic Team. The movie goes deeper than just discussing the 2008 team’s accomplishment, it also explores the circumstances surrounding the 2004 Olympic team. The film features interviews from many of the top NBA players from the 2000’s including Lebron, Melo, Wade, and Kobe.
I enjoyed hearing the interviews from all the players and coaches. I especially got a kick out of the story about the team returning to the hotel from partying in the early hours of the morning to find Kobe on his way to the gym. I also liked learning about the history of the US Men’s Olympic team. I had no idea bout Doug Collins and the 1972 Olympic team.
What I Read:
Sharp Sports Betting | Stanford Wong
Stanford Wong explains the math behind sport betting in this book. Wong goes into detail on what makes a good bet and how to calculate if you have an advantage. The book is littered with useful examples to help grasp the concepts. The only thing the book doesn’t cover is how to pick the winning side.
Sharp Sports Betting was one of the first books I read on sports betting. It changed how I view gambling. I like how Wong phrased bets as comparing probabilities rather than picking winners. Due to my engineering background, I thoroughly enjoyed the equations and sample problems.
What I’m Pondering:
It is far more lucrative and fun to leverage your strengths instead of attempting to fix all the chinks in your armor.
