Leon's List - 2024 Week 1

Leon’s List is a weekly post about waiver wire players I’m keeping an eye on.

The first newsletter of the season is always tough.

I would have picked the players that I had my eye on during the draft. So, it’s hard going through the free agents and finding players that I like.

There’s also no games over the past weekend. I have no stats, injuries, or news to digest. There’s no information to change my thoughts.

Even with that, I’m excited for another year of NFL and fantasy football.

Here are a list of players that intrigue me for Week 1:

Justin Fields (QB - PIT)

I have a feeling that Fields will be the starting quarterback for the Steelers in October. He might not be a winning quarterback but he can score fantasy points. He has shown it in his last two years in Chicago.

Fields might be the fastest quarterback in the league. He has the ability to break off runs. Quarterbacks with rushing ability are a huge advantage in fantasy.

This is a stash play that could come up big in 4 weeks.

Dontayvion Wicks (WR - GB)

Green Bay might have the best receiver room in the NFL. Unfortunately, Wicks is at the bottom of that group. But all it takes is an injury or fumble by one of the other receivers for him to get in the game.

This is another stash play.

Tyrone Tracy Jr. (RB - NYG)

Tyrone Tracy is a rookie 4th round pick from Purdue. He will start the year as the backup to Devin Singletary. He could end up the year as the starting running back for the Giants. Even if he doesn’t, there is a big hole to fill with Saquon now on the Eagles. I can see Tracy getting a good amount of touches on this offense either way.

Pat Freiermuth (TE - PIT)

Freiermuth did not have a great season last year due to injuries and Kenny Pickett.

He has an opportunity to have a career year this season. I expect him to get a ton of targets this year as the TE1. Russell Wilson (and Justin Fields) do not want to get hit. They will look to dump the ball to Freiermuth.

Jason Bates (K - DET)

The Lions starting kicker, Michael Badgley, is out for the season with a hamstring injury. Detriot signed Jason Bates from the UFL as their kicker for the year. He was decent in preseason, only missing a field goal and extra point.

Bates is more a bet on the Lions than Bates. There is Super Bowl buzz around this team. Their potent offense should remain the same with most of their players and OC returning. They should score a ton of points every week with plenty of chances for field goals and extra points.

This holds up for Week 1. The Lions vs Rams game has the highest O/U at 50.5 points.
